Juno Essay - Mise En Scene

Mise En Scene

Scene: Discussing the adoption

Setting – This scene creates a sense of domesticity by positioning a house with a minimalist style as an opposite to Juno’s house which is warm and lived in. Juno’s family’s house
Is opposed to the adopting parents’ as their house is more stylised and organise. As Juno’s Cosy cluttered space is juxtaposed to the more clinical space of the adoptive parents which communicates the idea of the different lifestyles and characters of the two families. The two spaces seem to indicate the feeling of pre and post child rearing. In this scene we see the composed organised nature. The fireplace creates a structured that is mirrored in the body language of the central actors.

Costume – The character Venessa played by Jenifer Garner is dressed very sophisticatedly and very formally as she has a shirt and a jumper with pearls round her neck as if she were attending a business meeting or something of that nature which portrays the idea that she wants to make a good impression and also gives the audience an idea of her way of living. Similarly Jason Bateman who played mark is dressed smartly however is conveyed as slightly more laid back and not so put together as such. This is a reflection on their characters attributes and what both of them want in life. Where as for Juno and her father Mac played by Ellen Page and J.K. Simmons they both were dressed very casually and their clothes were slightly worn. This symbolises the slight class divide that still exists to this day. It also infers the the MacGuff’s, especially Juno are almost naïve and very much unaware of the severity of the situation.

Hair and makeup – Both Vanessa and their attorney hair is pulled back creating a sleek look, again reinforcing the sophisticated impression and both have very minimal makeup. Juno’s hair is pulled back but stilly messy looking which gives it a relaxed feel, her makeup mirrors the idea that it’s “barely there”.

Props – There are no props used in this scene.

Lightning – The lighting is very artificial and gives the whole space a clinical feel which reinforces the point I made in the setting section.

Character expression – Both Vanessa and mark seem very nervous however saying that Vanessa is being extremely careful with everything she says and does, she wants it to be perfect. The audience gathered this ideas when Juno and her father enter Vanessa asked to take their coats and almost simultaneously is asking If they want a drink. Differently mark takes a more laid back approach to welcoming the McGuff’s by shaking Mac’s hand. Similarly Juno’s father is nervous however knows he has to be strong for Juno. Contrastingly to all of them, Juno is completely relaxed and makes light of the situation which could be a reflection of her age or he certainty in her decision.

Scene: The final scene

Setting – Juno joins Bleeker on the front steps outside of his house. Earlier we learnt that it is now summer from the transition from the previous scene. Both Bleeker and Juno have a guitar with them. Juno’s bike is in the shot as she just rode it over to meet up with Bleeker.

Costume – The costumes used in the final scene symbolise the rest of the movie. Bleeker is wearing khaki pants, a polo, a hoodie, and trainers. Juno is dressed in baggy, ripped jeans, and oversized flannel skirt and high tops. This illustrates how comfortable the two characters are with each other as well as in their relationship. The outfits are also very similar to what the characters style is through the film.

Hair & makeup –

Props – There are only really two props being used in this scene are the two guitars and the bike. Juno rode her bike over to Bleeker’s house and it’s leaning up against the wall next to her. Juno and Bleeker each have a guitar as they are playing them and singing together. The song that they are singing was the song in the background earlier in the film. Juno mentioned the band getting back together. This is mirrored in the final scene as they are getting together after everything they both have went through.

Lighting – The lighting is natural lighting as a result of the sun as when the scene was filmed it was summer and the two of them are outside. There are shadows cast on Juno and Bleeker from the tress that surround them on the street and in his front garden. The lighting in this scene creates a happy atmosphere due to the light, warm and brown tones. They create a sense of comfort illustrating the relaxed nature of the film.

Character expression -  Both characters are smiling, presented as happy and content as such.

The positive atmosphere of this scene is reinforced by the audience as the are “rooting” as such for the couple.

Scene: Finds out Juno is pregnant

Setting – This is one of the very first scenes in Juno… it is set in the local shop;  this gives the idea of the year it was set in from the products in the shop and how it is set up.

Costume – Juno is dressed extremely casual, almost as if she had just awoke. Previously she had just been drinking pints of sunny d which she was spilling down herself. This gives the audience the idea that she is feeling somewhat careless towards the way she looks as she is in a rush and has “more important” things going on. The shop keeper is dressed quite casually agin representing the time.

Hair & makeup – Juno has similar hair and makeup throughout the film; it is very natural and
Is relatable to a lot of teenagers.

Props – One of the main props in this scene is the pregnancy test, this makes the severity of the situation clear to the audience. The pregnancy test is one of the most significant parts of the film as everything is a result of Juno being pregnant. Some of the less significant props are the sunny d carton. Juno is drinking this at the very begin of the scene which initially slightly confuses the audience as it is a rather “random” as such activity to open the film, however quickly after the audience realise she is drinking it for a reason.

Lighting – Within this scene there is both natural and artificial lighting. The natural lighting is created from the large windows at the front of the shop and the artificial lighting is made from the shop lighting. Both together make a relax and welcoming atmosphere as the artificial lighting is very warm.

Character expression – Juno is very on edge and is anticipating the result however we are still reminded of her laid back nature as she isn’t extremely stressed nor acting in a way to imply it. Juno seems to have a somewhat pleasant relationship with the shop keeper as he seems nor happy or angry that she is almost “stealing” from him.
